Jack
Sorenson
He grew up carrying a six gun on his hip and
living in a saloon. Though born in 1954, Texas artist Jack Sorenson grew
up a cowboy on his father's dude ranch/movie set near the rim of historic
Palo Duro Canyon. Before he began to paint full-time in 1975, his job descriptions
included gunfighter, stagecoach driver, and horse-breaker.
"I loved breaking horses," Sorenson says, "but I've known all
my life that I was supposed to be an artist." Just after he married, he
was breaking horses during the day and painting at night. "I would have
been quite content to do both the rest of my life, but one day it occurred to
me that every old horse-breaker I knew had a bit of a hitch in his get-along.
Most of them walk something less that vertical. I was very lucky, I broke over
two hundred horses and was never hurt seriously. Of course, I was knocked unconscious
a few times." Although he enjoyed his years as a cowboy, he is quick to
admit that there are certain advantages to his current occupation. "After
almost thirty years in the art business, I haven't been knocked out once!"
Sorenson's success as an artist began quickly. "My very first show was
a total sell-out," he says. "God has blessed me with a great talent,
and I've been very fortunate to have had some excellent teachers." Sorenson
has studied art with the noted colorist Dord Fitz as well as several New York
painters and such noted western artists as Howard Terpning, Gary Carter, Gary
Niblett, and many more.
Sorenson's paintings hang in numerous corporate and private collections
coast to coast including the large Santa Fe Railway Collection in Chicago.
Feature articles on his work have appeared in many publications including
THE STATE OF TEXAS ART, ARTISTS OF THE ROCKIES, SOUTHWEST ART, and WESTERN
HORSEMAN. In addition, his paintings have been used as covers for several national
magazines and western novels.
Sorenson lives in Amarillo, Texas with his wife, Jeanne. They have five
children. His ordinal oil paintings are handled by Joe Wade Fine Art
in Santa Fe. His limited edition prints are available through Cardinal
